This article introduces a whole edition of the journal dedicated to exploring the issue of neurodiversity in the workplace and provides a synopsis of the chapters that follow. Whilst the research presented explores key themes focusing specifically on adjusting modern work environments and practices to integrate neurodiverse employees, the editorial draws broader powerful conclusions.
Organisations who embark on the journey to break down barriers and facilitate inclusive employment for neurodiverse colleagues find that they upskill their management capability to the benefit of all employees. Innovation often stems from those whose thinking styles and behaviours would be found towards the edges of the bell curve, from those who tend to be perceived as more challenging to manage. Once leaders have opened their minds to integrating neurodiverse team members and honed their skills in the process, they tend to start managing every employee as an individual thus maximising the contribution of all.
